Yorke provides a fair process for learning, by delivering quality and personalised learning experiences to all students. Class sizes are optimized for students to receive personalized attention from our qualified trainers and lecturers

Support for students

From the day you arrive until you finish your program, you will have various opportunities to participate in activities and settle into life at Yorke. Our orientation program will familiarise students with our campus, course requirements, meet other students, connect with staff, discover Melbourne and even have fun while studying. Some of the programs we have designed to help you settle before your studies commence include a comprehensive orientation program.

 

  • Student identification number and photo ID card
  • Introduction to your timetable, trainer, classroom and course requirements
  • Assistance with job placement within the industry
  • Career advice, including preparation of resumes and interview skills
  • Application for Course Credit and Recognition of Prior Learning (R.P.L)
  • Yorke provides airport pick up and pre arrival services and assistance with accommodation upon request

 

Focused On Student Needs & Ongoing support

During your studies Yorke staff will guide and support you on academic matters such as monitor your academic progress, implement intervention strategies to help you meet your course requirements and provide counselling from trainers and industry professionals. The Student Information Handbook (Pdf link to Student Information Handbook) will be provided during the orientation program to give you an overview of Yorke’s policies and procedures.

All advice and matters dealt by Yorke are treated as professional and confidential. If our staff member is unable to advice on certain matters, students will be referred to professional external services.

 

Finding work

Yorke’s courses are job ready so you can start working as soon as you graduate should you be successful in gaining employment.

Many of our students are also offered jobs after their placements with our partners in the healthcare, dental and childcare sectors (link to photo and testimonial of Lois Healy and picture)

Overseas students and their dependant spouses are allowed to work for 40 hours per fortnight per fortnight or full time basis during holidays on a student visa. This means that students will not have to wait to graduate to gain essential work experience and can work to support their lifestyle while studying.

Free study and placement support

Many overseas students upon arrival have difficulty adapting to the studying style in Australia.  If you need help with your studies, drop in to our main office in the Queen Street campus, email to admin@yorkeinstitute.com or make an appointment directly with your trainer. You will get free, expert advice on how to write assignments, developing your ideas, presentation skills, and techniques on how to improve your study.

Yorke through its network partners accept students to complete their placement hours. We prepare our students with interview techniques, professional appearance, resume writing to increase your chances of securing placements opportunities.  (link to Yorke’s placement policies and procedure-pdf doc)

English Language, Literacy and Numeracy support

Language Literacy and Numeracy expectations are based on the National Reporting System within the guidelines of DEEWR. Students who have been identified any language and literacy needs, will be given further assistance by adapting the delivery and assessment methods to suit the needs of the students by providing a mentor , assistance through using a scribe, a fellow student to assist with assessments activities or a variation of the assessment methods(i.e. verbal or demonstration rather than written)

Students are given additional support with public speaking and presenting, writing and ideas, study skills and grammar in class.  We’ll help you develop your English and communication skills while you work on your assignments.

 

Yorke’s Support Chart

Individual need Support Service
Pre-enrolment support to understand rights and obligations, fees and payment arrangements, and the services to be provided Students requiring additional support to understand the pre-enrolment information requirements are to be engaged on additional one-on-one sessions to talk the student through the information contained within the student handbook, the applicable course brochure and the schedule of fees and charges. It is preferable if these sessions are conducted face-to-face.
Minor LLN deficiency that would inhibit the participation Scheduled training during a weekday only. Allocate an additional trainer to provide individual support during learning activities and reasonable adjustment during assessment activities. This support must be coordinated through the Training Manager to ensure suitable allocation of trainers is available.

A verbal course can be offered and course structured altered to accommodate the student.

Significant LLN deficiency that would prevent participation and completion of the course Refer the student to TAFE to complete Course in Language, Literacy and Numeracy

Nil Cost

Part Time Day: 10 hours per week x 18 Weeks

This course is delivered part-time 2 days a week 9.00am – 1.00pm

Recognised difficulties in studying and learning Where appropriate to the program students identified with recognise difficulties in studying and learning are to be scheduled with additional one-on-one support sessions at regular intervals throughout the course program. These support sessions are to be used to review the learning content with the student and to engage the student in discussion about the subject matter. These sessions should be structured in accordance with the planned learning applicable to the course program. The study sessions should direct student back to the course reference material in order to encourage their individual self-paced effort.

Work hours are restrictive which would prevent the student attending training during Monday to Friday. Course can be offered as a weekend course to accommodate the availability of the student. The student can also attend split sessions to allow for half day participation. Where required, students can also be supported to adopt a self-paced study method we scheduled support sessions to assist the student to progress in the course program whilst taking into account their restricted availability.

 

English as second language A verbal course can be offered and course structured altered to accommodate (split days so not consecutive, more time to study and more individual attention from our trainers).

 

Financial difficulties that prevent the full payment of fees in advance. Offer fees on payment plan with a small initial payment to be made in advance then small fortnightly payments as a direct debit.
Student suffers from a nervous/anxiety disorder. We can accommodate by giving individual attention away from others involved in the training program. Training and assessment deliberately offered in a relaxed mode without time pressures.
Inadequate clothing to participate in training Student may be able to access suitable clothing and footwear at low cost via: St Vincent de Paul Society.

Students with a disability or medical condition All possible allowances may be provided to persons with disabilities.

Assessors are to use their judgement in assessing the student’s ability to perform tasks in a safe manner.

 

Students with visual impairment Students with visual impairment can be supported by supplying internal learning resources with a larger printed font.

Students can also be supplied with audio recordings of learning sessions where appropriate.
